What Residents Need to Know: Vultures with Bird Flu in Pierce Township
December 8, 2025
Pierce Township officials are monitoring a situation involving dozens of dead vultures on the campus of St. Bernadette. The birds were discovered last week, and the Pierce Township Fire Department, along with other local agencies, worked with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) to have the birds removed from school property.
Preliminary lab tests revealed the birds died from HPAI (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza), commonly known as bird flu. The risk for residents is low but if you find dead birds near your home, keep your distance and contact the Ohio Department of Natural Resources at 800-WILDLIFE (945-3543).
